Comparison of Ionospheric Electric Currents and Plasma Convection Patterns Observed during Substorms

چکیده
The effect of magnetospheric substorms on the global ionospheric convection pattern is widely debated. Discussed here, is a study made of ionospheric electric currents, co-incident with plasma convection at the time of substorm onset, using the HF radars of the Super Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN), and the global array of ground magnetometers. Preliminary results are presented, which utilise an ionospheric potential mapping model to produce plasma convection vectors and electric potential contours, with corresponding ionospheric currents being derived from magnetic perturbations. Clear indications of a relationship between the substorm current system and the plasma convection patterns are seen.

Superposed epoch analysis of the ionospheric convection evolution during substorms: onset latitude dependence
Using data from the Super Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN) we investigate the ionospheric convection response to magnetospheric substorms. Substorms were identified using the Far Ultraviolet (FUV) instrument on board the Imager for Magnetopause-to-Aurora Global Exploration (IMAGE) spacecraft, and were then binned according to the magnetic latitude of their onset. A superposed epoch analys...

During the 6 August 1995, the CUTLASS Finland HF radar ran in a high time resolution mode, allowing measurements of line-of-sight convection velocities along a single beam with a temporal resolution of 14 s. Data from such scans, during the substorm expansion phase, revealed pulses of equatorward ̄ow exceeding 600 m s with a duration of 5 min and a repetition period of 8 min. Each pulse of enha...

In this study, the relationship between auroral absorption, electrojet currents, and ionospheric plasma convection velocity is investigated using a series of new methods where temporal correlations are calculated and analysed for different events and MLT sectors. We employ cosmic noise absorption (CNA) observations obtained by the Imaging Riometer for Ionospheric Studies (IRIS) system in Kilpis...
متن کاملTransmission of the electric fields to the low latitude ionosphere in the magnetosphere-ionosphere current circuit
The solar wind energy is transmitted to low latitude ionosphere in a current circuit from a dynamo in the magnetosphere to the equatorial ionosphere via the polar ionosphere. During the substorm growth phase and storm main phase, the dawn-to-dusk convection electric field is intensified by the southward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF), driving the ionospheric DP2 currents composed of two-ce...
متن کاملRelation of substorm disturbances triggered by abrupt solar-wind changes to physics of plasma sheet transport
Substorm onset occurs within the near-Earth plasma sheet in the region that maps to the Harang electric field reversal observed within the ionosphere. IMF changes that are expected to reduce the convection electric field after 25 min of negative IMF B are well known to cause substorms. Solar wind dynamic pressure P enhancements following prolonged strongly southward IMF (B 8 nT) also cause subs...
